Bonjour! Good morning!\u00a0Bozhoo!\u00a0Kwe\u00a0Kwe\u00a0(kou\u00e9)!<\/p>\n

Je suis\u00a0ravie\u00a0d\u2019\u00eatre\u00a0avec\u00a0vous\u00a0aujourd\u2019hui.<\/p>\n

Votre\u00a0engagement\u00a0envers\u00a0vos\u00a0communaut\u00e9s est inspirant. Chaque jour,\u00a0vous contribuez \u00e0 b\u00e2tir des municipalit\u00e9s dynamiques, accueillantes et r\u00e9silientes,\u00a0et votre leadership est essentiel\u00a0\u00e0\u00a0la vitalit\u00e9 de\u00a0notre province.<\/p>\n

I would like to\u00a0begin\u00a0by recognizing the leaders and staff\u00a0whose\u00a0communities have been affected by forest fires, as well as those\u00a0whose municipalities\u00a0have hosted evacuated residents.<\/p>\n

Thank you for the tireless work you have done around the clock to keep people safe and make sure they have shelter.<\/p>\n

Thank you as well to\u00a0the leaders and staff\u00a0in Niagara\u00a0who have\u00a0been working to help\u00a0residents\u00a0affected by\u00a0the historic\u00a0flooding in the region.<\/p>\n

Today, we all stand in solidarity with you.<\/p>\n

L\u2019Ontario est\u00a0fort\u00a0quand il est solidaire.<\/p>\n

Merci pour votre d\u00e9vouement exceptionnel.<\/p>\n

Merci d\u2019offrir\u00a0soutien et refuge aux collectivit\u00e9s les plus durement touch\u00e9es par les feux\u00a0de for\u00eats et\u00a0les inondations.<\/p>\n

Mayor Sutcliffe, thank you for welcoming us here to Ottawa. And happy two hundredth anniversary to\u00a0this wonderful city\u2014my\u00a0<\/i>city! Today, we \u201ccelebrate together\u201d!<\/p>\n

Congratulations, as well, to Mayor Josh Morgan and everyone from London, Ontario – on your bicentennial!<\/p>\n

Also, this year, we mark the twentieth anniversary of the passing of the 2006 Budget Measures Act, which extended municipal terms from three to four years. And because twenty is divisible by four \u2026 we have elections coming up very soon.<\/p>\n

It is an exciting time\u00a0\u2026 a time that puts\u00a0a spotlight\u00a0on our democratic system.<\/p>\n

I would like to\u00a0commend\u00a0AMO for the ongoing work of the\u00a0Healthy Democracy Project\u00a0to\u00a0promote\u00a0civility, and\u00a0to\u00a0encourage\u00a0greater and wider participation in elections.<\/p>\n

I would also like to mention another, newer, initiative:\u00a0Here in Ottawa,\u00a0in April, Cooperation Canada and Resilient Societies\u00a0hosted the inaugural Civic Space Summit.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est plus de 300 personnes\u00a0qui\u00a0ont\u00a0r\u00e9fl\u00e9chi ensemble aux conditions essentielles qui permettent \u00e0 une\u00a0soci\u00e9t\u00e9\u00a0de s\u2019\u00e9panouir. Elles ont partag\u00e9 leurs perspectives avec un objectif commun\u00a0: renforcer nos d\u00e9mocraties.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0participants,\u00a0from around the world,\u00a0shared their perspectives on something that is key to the health of our democracy.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s\u00a0not in\u00a0every country\u00a0that people can gather openly to exchange ideas, challenge one another respectfully, and imagine\u00a0a better future together.<\/p>\n

Civic space makes this possible.<\/p>\n

For me, one of the most important things that came out of the\u00a0summit was\u00a0the idea that\u00a0we, as a society,\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0as\u00a0individuals, have a responsibility to foster, create, use, and maintain\u00a0spaces where people can share diverse perspectives.<\/p>\n

L\u2019espace civique est un\u00a0incontournable\u00a0\u2013\u00a0un\u00a0haut\u00a0lieu o\u00f9 naissent les id\u00e9es\u00a0et\u00a0o\u00f9 se d\u00e9veloppent la confiance, le dialogue et le sentiment d\u2019appartenance.<\/p>\n

C\u2019est aussi un espace o\u00f9 les d\u00e9saccords peuvent devenir des occasions d\u2019apprentissage et de collaboration.<\/p>\n

Civic space can be\u00a0fostered\u00a0by physical space\u2014for instance,\u00a0at the Hub in Chapleau.<\/p>\n

This\u00a0former Anglican Church\u00a0has been reimagined as\u00a0a beautiful coffee shop offering fitness spaces, programs for\u00a0children, a marketplace for artisans,\u00a0and\u00a0supports for women.<\/p>\n

At the Hub,\u00a0people come together to have important discussions about their community and make\u00a0plans for the future\u2014just as they do in other places around Ontario, such as the Centre Pauline-Charron in Ottawa and the\u00a0MWG Youth & Family Wellness Camp in Kenora.<\/p>\n

And civic space can be brought about by digital space, such as online forums and discussion groups that promote connection and build community resilience.<\/p>\n

Here in Ontario, we pride ourselves on our\u00a0diversity.\u00a0But we must find\u00a0more effective\u00a0ways to harness the many perspectives\u00a0and sets of experience\u00a0we have among us \u2026 and to use them to bring about a truly inclusive\u00a0and forward-thinking society.<\/p>\n

Nous avons\u00a0de\u00a0la chance,\u00a0ici en\u00a0Ontario !<\/p>\n

Des\u00a0personnes de tous horizons contribuent au bien commun. Cette diversit\u00e9 est une\u00a0grande force. Lorsqu\u2019elle s\u2019exprime dans un esprit de respect\u00a0mutuel, elle devient un levier de progr\u00e8s soci\u00e9tal.<\/p>\n

I hope that the conversations you will be having over the next few days\u00a0will spark\u00a0ideas\u00a0for\u00a0more\u00a0places and opportunities\u00a0for\u00a0even\u00a0more\u00a0meaningful conversations and interactions \u2026 between and among\u00a0the people who live in Ontario\u2019s\u00a0444\u00a0municipalities.<\/p>\n

I look forward to seeing some of you at the women\u2019s networking session this afternoon, where we will discuss\u00a0the role of civic space.\u00a0In the meantime,\u00a0I wish you\u00a0all\u00a0an enjoyable and fruitful conference!<\/p>\n
