THE HONOURABLE EDITH DUMONT’S COAT OF ARMS

THE HONOURABLE EDITH DUMONT’S COAT OF ARMS

A coat of arms is a visual way to show identity and purpose. Through colours and symbols, it reflects values, responsibilities, and traditions.

Her Honour Edith Dumont’s coat of arms represents both her personal journey and her role as Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

Arms: The triangular base, in the shape of a mountain, is a pun on Ms. Dumont’s name (which means “of the mountain” in French). The trillium-fleur-de-lis is a unique symbol created for Her Honour as the first Francophone lieutenant-governor of Ontario, referring to both the province she represents and Francophone culture. Their number corresponds to her three children. The colour blue alludes to water and air, two elements evoking the notion of freedom, in both the physical and the spiritual sense.

Crest: The snowshoe hare is a model in how it is able to adapt to its environment. Known for its speed, impressive leaps and sensitivity, it is also a symbol of abundance and hard work, and a spiritual symbol of renewal. The apple branch recalls the orchard owned by Her Honour’s parents. The crown of maple leaves and snowflakes expresses her Canadian identity, her attachment to Canadian democracy and her love of the great outdoors.

Motto: This French phrase meaning “With hope and kindness” reminds us that by joining forces, keeping our hearts open, and looking toward the future, we create sustainable environments infused with humanity and resilience.

Supporters: Just like Her Honour, the swallow embodies movement and freedom, as it does not fear venturing out to explore far-off horizons. A harbinger of good weather and thus a symbol of renewal, this bird also symbolizes perseverance and discipline, qualities associated with education, in which field she worked for decades.
